  • Individual therapy

Individual therapy gives you a safe space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and concerns. It can help you understand that you can do something to improve your situation. That leads to changes that enhance healthy behaviour, whether it’s improving relationships, expressing emotions better, doing better at work or school, or thinking more positively. Therapy can help you uncover your strengths and learn new skills that will allow you to deal with the challenges that arise in life.

    Couple therapy

Relationships may go through difficult times and can benefit from couples’ therapy. We all want to feel loved, appreciated, and understood by our partners. We all want to make a good thing better. If the connection in your relationship feels off course or could simply use some fine-tuning, giving couple therapy a chance would be helpful.

We all have different styles of interacting with others, we learn these styles in our families that we grew up in.

Your style may differ from your partner, so you may be operating on different wavelengths so getting your needs met in the relationship may be challenging. Here at Presence of Mind Psychology we can work with you to recognise and overcome these natural differences. Learning the way you and your partner engage with the world (and why you both engage the way you do) can help you both develop empathy for each other. Empathy is key to relationships.

  • At Presence of Mind Psychology, we know that before your first appointment you may be feeling ambivalent, or stressed, frightened, embarrassed, relieved, or all these emotions combined.

When you arrive, you will be welcomed into a comfortable and quiet space. We will talk with you and listen to what has brought you to therapy. We want to get to know you and how you see yourself, the problems you are dealing with, and a little about your history.

Your appointment will be 50minutes long, and, as well as the above, time will be spent on discussing client confidentiality, cancellation policy and answering any questions you may have. Discussions may include length of your treatment and methods to be employed.

  • Here at Presence of Mind Psychology we are aware that everyone is inherently different, and as such we all have our own ways of coping with issues. There is no one fit for all clients which means people who seek psychological support will be guided by their psychologist in how many sessions they may need. Sometimes people get to resolve their issues with a small number of sessions. Sometimes it is recommended for others to work on their long-term emotional development and as such schedule sessions regularly over a longer period of time.

  • You do not necessarily need a referral to see a psychologist.  You may pay privately or if you have a Private Health Fund that includes psychology you may wish to use this for part payment of your session.

If you wish to claim a rebate from Medicare, you will require a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP or medical professional. Under a MHCP you are eligible for a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions in a calendar year.

  • Yes, you can.

If you possess a MHCP addressed to an alternate practice or psychologist, you do not need to see your GP to have this changed to an alternative psychologist. Following an initial appointment, your psychologist will write to your referring doctor to indicate you are now under their care.

  • We provide a receipt for treatment after all private sessions. With this, you may be able to claim a rebate for therapy under ‘Extras’ if you have private health insurance. Please contact your insurer directly regarding the rebate amount as this varies between health funds and depends on your level of cover.

  • To receive Medicare rebate, you will have to speak with your GP about your eligibility. Your GP or in some circumstances, psychiatrist or paediatrician, will assess whether you have a mental health condition. They usually require a longer appointment; they will speak with you and may ask you to complete a questionnaire. They will then write a Mental Health Care Plan that you will bring to your appointment.

  • No, a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) issued by a GP under Medicare typically covers individual therapy sessions for mental health issues, but it does not extend to couple or family therapy. If you are seeking couple therapy, you would likely need to pay privately or explore alternative funding options depending on the therapist's services.

It might be worth discussing with your GP if there are any exceptions or additional support available for couple therapy, or if any components of individual mental health care can be incorporated into sessions with your partner.

  • Yes, we do.

There are many reasons why you may wish to access the video consult instead of coming into the rooms in person.

Presence of Mind Psychology can offer video consults.   We use a highly secure and confidential video conferencing program. It is easy to use and requires no set up by you.

  • Presence of Mind Psychology sessions are 50 minutes in duration. The “therapeutic hour’ is the industry standard. There are many psychological factors for keeping sessions around this time. The client feels contained, not over exposed to painful emotions. There is a clear endpoint, and you feel safe to feel, process and contain intense emotions. It encourages both the psychologist and you to make the most of the time. Longer sessions may lead to fatigue and over exposure to emotions. You will need time to digest and benefit from the increments of information allowing time to process.

  • On your first meeting with your psychologist, it is not only important that you feel heard, but you also want to feel understood and that the feedback you are receiving feels that we are on the right track. It is also important to feel respected, validated and that they want the best for you.
